There was already the Millennium Village and the Tapestry of Nations parade, so a new and big nighttime show was needed. When the Millennium Celebration hit Epcot it was time to introduce a new nighttime show. The only changes being the name and some music. In 1997, IllumiNations 25 was turned into IllumiNations. The show would end with a jazz version of the Circle of Life. Water effects and music were used to honor the countries and the Future World themes at the time. World Showcase Lagoon lit up with fireworks and lasers. All the countries around the World Showcase were introduced and illuminated. IllumiNations was first brought to the park in 1996 for the 25th anniversary of Walt Disney World. I want to talk about what Illuminations was, where it came from, and specifically, that final night which I was lucky enough to attend. I’m sorry, but I am still grieving over it so I have decided to dedicate this blog post to Illuminations. Thanks for visiting MickeyBlog.Well, it has been a little bit over a month since our dear IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth has left us. I feel no such connection to Creations Shop. Maybe I dislike it because Mouse Gear became an integral part of each EPCOT visit. This change really irks me, and I cannot even put my finger on why. It’s definitely more modern.ĭid the changes help anything, though? That’s debatable, but what’s not up for argument is that Mouse Gear had a better name. Now, some Imagineers would take issue with that, as they worked tirelessly to refresh the store. It’s also…pretty much Mouse Gear with better lighting. This new place, Creations Shop, is bright, fun and charming. Then, for no apparent reason, Disney closed it one day to build a new, modern store. It was the go-to place for all your Disney merchandise needs. Mouse Gear claimed the title of the most trafficked store at EPCOT. Then again, so are all the concepts in Norse mythology. The Norwegian tourism department worked with Disney on the construction of its World Showcase pavilion.įor this reason, the Norway pavilion is among the most authentic of all the international hotspots at EPCOT. Loyal fans (like me!) still hope for a return to the Dreamfinder/Figment focus of yesteryear, though. That’s like selling a BLT without the bacon or bread.īy mid-2002, a modified version with Figment had replaced the reviled V2.0. It…lasted several months longer than Journey into YOUR Imagination.ĭisney woefully miscalculated with the story as it dropped the characters of the Dreamfinder and Figment. I mean, I previously mentioned Rocket Rods as a total failure. So as far as Disney disasters go, it’s high on the list. Seriously, this ride lasted for two years and one week. Their updated version of the ride, Journey into YOUR Imagination, went over about as well as Crystal Pepsi (google it, kids!).
Imagineers redesigned the attraction from the ground up. The most regrettable of these decisions involved Journey into Imagination. So, Disney decided to freshen things up for the upcoming millennial celebration.
The park undeniably hadn’t aged as well as expected. Then, after 15 years, Disney executives evaluated EPCOT and found several elements lacking. People once stood in line for eight hours to buy a popcorn bucket with Figment on it! I mean, I don’t need to tell you about the popularity of Figment.
